State Designated "Susan B. Anthony Day" to be Held February 15
Festivities Planned at the Susan B. Anthony House
Rochester, NY - The 1st annual New York State "Susan B. Anthony" day will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 15, commemorating the day the noted advocate for women's rights was born 185 years ago. Legislation establishing the honor was signed by Governor George Pataki on November 5.
Festivities celebrating Susan B. Anthony Day will be held at the Anthony House, located at 17 Madison Street in Rochester. Free birthday cake (while quantities last), made possible by the Rochester Riverside Convention Center, will be served beginning with a cake cutting at 11:00 a.m. In addition, visitors are invited to tour the House (also free of charge) beginning at 11:00 a.m., with the last tour scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Historic portrayals will include Susan B. Anthony herself, as portrayed by Rochesterian Barbara Blaisdell.
Upon enacting Susan B. Anthony Day, Gov. Pataki noted, "This new law will ensure that Susan B. Anthony's life, legacy and remarkable courage will be forever commemorated in New York for generations to come."
The Susan B. Anthony House was Anthony's home during the most politically active period of her life and the site of her famous arrest for voting in 1872. Anthony' story of courage and determination has been told and re-told to visitors for more than 50 years. The Susan B. Anthony House is supported primarily through the contributions of its members.
