2017 Suffragist City Parade – Saturday, July 22

The 2017 Suffragist City Parade:  Because of Women Like Her will take place in Rochester, NY at the end of VoteTilla. If you are interested in marching, please refer to the Terms & Conditions below or download the PDF. The Registration form is at the bottom of this page.

Parade registration is Closed. You can still participate as a spectator, and join in the celebration at the Susan B. Anthony Neighborhood! Please join us!!

Parade line-up begins at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, at the Riverside Festival Site at the corner of Court Street and Exchange Boulevard in Downtown Rochester. Step-off from the staging site is 10:30 a.m.

Marchers: We recommend that you park in the Court Street Garage. After the parade and the Suffragist City Celebration  a shuttle can  return marchers to the Court Street Garage. 

Please read the Terms & Conditions for information on the Parade line-up and safety. Participants will receive their line-up assignment by email no later than NOON on Monday, July 16, 2017.  This assignment will specify the order in which participants will  line up in the staging area. The line-up information will also be posted on the VoteTilla.org website.

2017 Suffragist City Parade Terms & Conditions

The 2017 Suffragist City Parade: “Because of Women Like Her…” will commemorate and celebrate the centennial of woman suffrage in New York State. The theme of this year’s parade is “Because of Women Like Her….” The purpose of the parade is to:

• Promote the history of woman suffrage, its people, places, issues, and relevance today;
• Provide an opportunity for individuals, groups, and communities to collaborate through a creative, engaging, participatory, and celebratory educational experience;
• Celebrate women who have made a difference in our lives — share their images, share their names, share their accomplishments.

By registering for the Parade, all Applicants and their Participants agree that they and their parade entry shall be supportive of and appropriate to the purposes of the Suffragist City Parade, as stated above.

Each group may carry a banner with their group name.

 

The Basics:

• The Parade takes place Saturday, July 22, 2017, regardless of weather. There is no rain backup date for the Parade. Select your dress and prepare your parade décor with the weather forecast in mind.  Please be sure to bring your own water, sunscreen, and hats as needed.
• Lineup begins 9:00 a.m. and the parade begins at 10:30 a.m.
• Participants must enter staging area from Exchange Boulevard.
• Participants must lineup according to instructions for numbered spaces, which will be provided by July 16.
• From the staging area, the .75-mile parade route will take participants:
  West on Court Street
  North on Exchange Boulevard
  West on Broad Street
  West on Main Street
  North on Madison Street
• Marchers, vehicles, floats and horses: North on Madison Street, past the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House, to Anthony Square Park.
• Vehicles, floats, and horses: will continue North on Madison Street to Silver Street, and turn east on Silver Street, cross King St and park at Data Vault Storage parking lot.

Before the Parade:

• Staging area number assignments and detailed route information will be sent to each Applicant via email. Please share this information with your parade participants.
• All participants (or designated group leaders) must check in with the Parade Marshals at the staging area along Court Street. Do not come to the staging area before 9:00 a.m. to allow the Parade Volunteers to set up the staging area without distractions.
• Participants must march in their assigned sequence location.
• If you are decorating your entry at the staging area, remember to bring your own materials. You are responsible for all items that you brought with you and you must take them with you when you step off. Bring bags to recycle and/or dispose of your own waste.

All Parade Participants:

• You may NOT THROW or DISTRIBUTE anything as you march.  Violators will be held responsible for all cleanup costs and/or fines. Be mindful of children!
• Walkers, monitors, and floats/float riders are not allowed to sell items.
• Explosives or open flames are not allowed. We discourage use of water guns, water balloons, cannons, etc.
• Marching Units assume all responsibility for the safety of all monitors, marchers, spectators, bystanders, and property. The National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House is not responsible for any loss, damage, or injuries caused to participants, spectators, or animals during the Parade, along the parade route, or in the SBA Neighborhood and Anthony Square Park.
• The National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House reserves the right to remove any person or unit from the staging area, parade route, or Anthony Square Park that, in its opinion, is a hindrance to the progress of the parade, places other participants or spectators in danger, or violates any of the rules.
• To keep the Parade safe for all, you are encouraged to observe all laws, watch for Police and Marshals’ direction at all times, be observant of what is going on ahead of you, and be aware of what spectators are doing.
• This celebration of woman suffrage and the contributions women have made and continue to make to our community and our country may draw protestors. We are advised NOT to interact with them. Ignore them and move forward past them in a calm and orderly fashion. Police and Marshals will be present to monitor our safety.

Floats and Vehicle Entries

• Floats may NOT be higher than 13 feet or wider than 25 feet. There are street lamps, wires, and curves along the parade route. Consider these factors when designing and decorating your entry. All floats must have walkers or monitors on all four sides to ensure the float does not interfere with street lamps, wires, and pedestrians.
• Decorations must be properly secured to withstand the wind, rain and/or hot sun for the 3- to 4-hour duration of the Parade, from staging to completion.
• Make sure your float can safely accommodate all riders. To prevent injuries, each rider must be able to easily grab hold of a reinforced portion of the float. Anyone riding on a float is responsible for his or her own safety.
• The SPEED LIMIT is 5 mph! Be prepared to stop occasionally along the Parade route.
• Parking of floats and vehicles participating in the parade is the responsibility of the designated group leader.
• To exit the parade, all floats and vehicles will go to the end of Madison Street, turn right onto Silver Street and proceed to the Data Vault Building where you can park and unload safely. Please obey all traffic signs along the way, but do not make any unnecessary stops along Silver Street so that parade traffic keeps moving forward.
• It is the responsibility of the Applicant to ensure that each vehicle that enters the parade lineup area and/or participates in the parade has liability insurance, and that the driver has a valid driver’s license. These must be presented upon request. Failure to provide either will disqualify the Individual, Organization or Business from participating in the Parade.
