Anthony Museum Welcomes New Board Members

Rochester, NY – The National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House announced today that five new board members have been elected to serve on the Museum’s Board of Trustees. The new board members were installed as of June 1, 2015 to serve a three-year term. These board members are:

Juilee Decker – Professor, Rochester Institute of Technology
Kimberly Harding – Associate, Nixon Peabody LLP
Mary Moglia-Cannon – Investment Analyst and Relationship Manager
Cheryl Nelan – President and Owner, CMIT Solutions of Monroe
Catherine “Kit” Pollicove – Fundraising consultant

Four board members were elected for their second consecutive term of three years:

Lisa Clark – Senior Researcher, Rochester Institute of Technology
Sharon Salluzzo – Children’s Literature Consultant; Professional Storyteller
Bernie Todd Smith – Educational Ethics consultant
Kate Welc – Assurance Senior Manager, Mengel Metzger Barr and Co LLP

Anthony Museum to host illustrator Nicole Tadgell

Rochester, NY – The National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House is pleased to welcome Nicole Tadgell, illustrator of Friends for Freedom: The Story of Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, as our featured speaker for this year’s intergenerational Family Tea event.

Tadgell will lead guests on a special tour of 17 Madison Street, as seen through the eyes of a children’s book illustrator. Activities, refreshments, and a reading of the book will be held in our Carriage House following the tour.

“I was delighted to be able to visit the Susan B. Anthony House while doing research for the book, and enjoyed the tour very much,” says Tadgell. “It was wonderful to see Susan B. Anthony’s dress, work area, and see what her daily life was like.”

This year’s event will be held on Sunday, April 26, from 2pm to 4pm. The cost to attend is $25 per person. This price includes a signed copy of the book for each child. Additional copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.

Wreath Ceremony to Commemorate Anniversary of Susan B. Anthony’s Death

Rochester, NY – The National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House will host a ceremonial wreath hanging to commemorate the 109th anniversary of Susan B. Anthony’s death on March 13, 2015 at 11:00 am. The ceremony will include remarks by Anthony Museum President & CEO, Deborah L. Hughes.

The press and public are invited to attend.

Anthony Artifact Returns to Madison Street

Rochester, NY – A cross-stitch sampler created by Susan B. Anthony over a three-year period beginning in 1831 will be returned to the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House on Thursday, March 5, 2015, at 1pm. The artifact has been in the care of conservator Sarah Stevens of Zephyr Preservation Studios.

The conservation work was made possible through a 2014 Museum Conservation Treatment Grant by the Greater Hudson Heritage Network, in association with the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA).

Deborah L. Hughes, President & CEO of the Anthony Museum, noted, “Susan B. Anthony had this sampler prominently displayed in her office when she was in her eighties, so we know that it was important to her. It is precious today because it connects us personally to young Susan and her family. This was her handiwork, long before she was the Great Reformer”.

A second artifact, a pair of kid gloves belonging to Susan B. Anthony and said to have been worn at her 50th birthday party, has been on display at the Museum of the City of New York since December 2014. Initially set to return to the Anthony Museum this month, the gloves will now be on display through August 2015.

Our 2015 annual Susan B. Anthony Birthday Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, February 11, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center!

Lynn SherrThe keynote speaker will be award-winning journalist and author, Lynn Sherr. Sherr’s latest book is Sally Ride: America’s First Woman in Space. She is also the author of the 1996 Failure is Impossible: Susan B. Anthony in Her Own Words. Inspired by Sally Ride’s story, this year’s luncheon theme, “Thanks to Susan B, we can reach for the stars!”, is a celebration of the legacy Anthony’s life & work has had on the stellar woman of today.

Entries may be submitted online via Twitter, using the hashtag #ThankYouSusanB, or Facebook, by posting the submission to the Museum page. Submissions will be accepted through February 4, 2015. Selected entries will be screened at the luncheon on February 11. One entry will be randomly chosen to receive a signed copy of Lynn Sherr’s Sally Ride: America’s First Woman in Space.

Historic Neighborhood Wants YOU this Election Day!

Rochester, NY – The Susan B. Anthony Historic Preservation District will play host to several activities celebrating Election Day on Tuesday, November 4th, 2014:

Stop by the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House at 17 Madison Street (open 11am – 5pm), to pay tribute to Susan B. Anthony and the pioneers who made it possible for us to vote! Add your on camera “Thank you, Susan B!” to our video collection and tell us what the right to vote means to you. While you’re here, enter a drawing for a limited edition “Ms. Anthony” Purse with a Purpose, part of the Abigail Riggs Collection.

Relax over lunch at the 1872 Café (open 6:30am – 3pm), located at 431 West Main Street – on the spot where Susan B. Anthony and 14 other women made history by voting in that year’s presidential election. The Café will be offering new menu items and drawings throughout the day. Prizes include 1872 Café travel mugs, guest passes to the Anthony Museum, and a complimentary lunch for two at the Café.

While you’re in the neighborhood, take a stroll through Susan B. Anthony Square Park, redesigned at the turn of the century by the Olmsted brothers, and home to “Let’s Have Tea”, an interactive statue of Susan B. Anthony & Frederick Douglass by local artist, Pepsy Kettavong.

Follow Rochester’s Heritage Trail, a 1.25 mile long path, from the Public Library’s Rundel Building to the Anthony Museum.

Lady Long Rider, Bernice Ende, to visit Anthony Museum

Bernice Ende will travel through Rochester on Thursday, September 4th, making stops at the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House and Mt. Hope Cemetery. Ms. Ende, a retired teacher, is currently on a 2 ½ year, 8,000 mile horseback trek across the United States and Canada to commemorate Montana’s suffrage centennial.

Ms. Ende will pay her respects and give prepared remarks at Susan B. Anthony’s gravesite in Mt. Hope Cemetery, section C, at approximately 11:15 am. She will be available to media for a limited time following her remarks. Ms. Ende will then proceed to the Susan B. Anthony neighborhood, arriving at the Anthony Museum on horseback by 1:30 pm, where she will also be available to the press. At 3:00 pm, Ms. Ende will present “1914 to 2014: 100 years of woman suffrage in Montana” in the Carriage House. The public is invited to attend this exclusive engagement.

Upcoming Event: 2014 Susan B. Anthony Festival

The 2014 Susan B. Anthony Festival will take place on Sunday, August 17, from noon to 5pm in the Susan B. Anthony Park between Madison & King Streets. This annual event celebrates the anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women throughout the country the right to vote. The amendment is better known as the “Susan B. Anthony Amendment”.

ChetCatallo2Live music & entertainment will be provided throughout the afternoon in the Park. Local artists include 6-time Grammy nominee and 2012 Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester “Artist of the Year”, Chet Catallo & the Cats, who will perform at 3pm. Also performing are Cammy Enharo, the Raging Grannies, and the Spiritus Christi Choir. Food vendors and unique artisans will also be on hand.

tours (3)Free walking tours of this 19th century Historic Preservation District will also be offered, beginning in the Park. Tours of the Anthony House will be available at a discounted cost for the event.

This event is presented by the Susan B. Anthony Neighborhood Association and the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House. Deborah L. Hughes, President & CEO of the Anthony Museum, said, “Susan B. Anthony worked all her life to give women a voice. Considering the events of the past year, her work is as relevant today as it was when she was living.”

Dawn Noto, President of the Susan B. Anthony Neighborhood Association, said, “We are very excited for the annual Susan B. Anthony Festival. Our Historic Preservation District is looking fantastic and this festival gives us an opportunity to share the collaborative work this community has done.”
